Best movies for children - Ages 10 and up

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
As if you don’t know, a young boy named Elliott discovers that an alien spacecraft has mistakenly left behind one of its own squashy kind, who isn’t sure how to get home. “I watched it when they reissued it. I cried, like, three times,” Schwartz says. “Maybe it’s a great movie about childhood for an older audience.”
Back to the Future (1985)
Sent back in time to 1955 by scientist Doc Brown and his super-souped-up DeLorean, young Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) inadvertently interferes with the courtship of his own parents, jeopardizing his very existence. “The playful ideas and mind-puzzle behind the concept are really intriguing,” says Schwartz. “I could have chosen one of the Star Wars movies, but there’s more to chew on with Back to the Future`.”
The Princess Bride (1987)
William Goldman adapted his own ingenious fairy tale for the big screen, and the dialogue is as quotable (“Inconceivable!” “As you wish”) as the Cliffs of Insanity are high. This tale of pirates, revenge and true love will charm even the kissing-is-icky crowd.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
The lonely creation of an eccentric inventor, Edward is a sensitive and gentle young man who happens to have scissors for hands. “It’s the ultimate outsider film that has everything,” says Prete. “Fantasy, drama, comedy, a love story—and Johnny Depp.”
School of Rock (2003)
A cash-strapped metal guitarist (Jack Black) poses as a substitute teacher at a prep school, and tries to turn his class into a better rock band than the one that ousted him. “It’s amazingly smart,” says Schwartz. “It’s very pro-education, but at the same time with a counterculture edge to it that’s genuine.
